Deborah Knott may have lost the district election, but a bigoted judge's sudden death--and some old-fashioned political horse trading--have won her a governor's appointment. True to Southern form, her swearing-in is followed by a raucous reception that brings out every elderly aunt and cousin in the county.

Unfortunately, Lu Bingham, the force behind WomenAid, is at the reception, too. Not only has she come to collect the leftovers for her daycare center, but she's also there to collect on one of Deborah's more extravagant campaign promises. Before Deborah can say, "If elected..." she is committed to putting her muscle where her mouth was, spending weekends with an all-woman crew as the group attempts to build its first house for a needy single mom.

Old stereotypes die hard. Herman Knott, one of Deborah's numerous brothers, has to be hectored and cajoled before he'll give reluctant permission for his daughter and novice electrician Annie Sue to wire the house. Nor does it help that the county building inspector is a swaggering chauvinist nit-picker who's more interested in scoring with the young women than scoring their work.

Chaos erupts before the house is even half-finished. On the same rainy summer night that Herman collapses on the side of the road from an apparent heart attack, Annie Sue is found battered and half-naked in the deserted structure. Has she been raped? Who left her in that condition? And whose blood is that on Deborah's own hammer?

Dwight Bryant, an old childhood friend (and a bit of a good ol' boy), is a modern and efficient police detective, but it is Deborah who must judge whether dark secrets in her own family have led to murder. And if so, reveal the darker more troubling reasons why.

I enjoy this series, but the family tree is needed before it's provided in Slow Dollar. I can't give it all here, but I think this list of her brothers should help. The first 8 are with Deborah's father Kezzie & his 1st wife, Annie Ruth Langdon, and the rest are with Deborah's mother Susan Stephenson. I'm also naming their wives.

Southern Discomfort A Deborah Knott Mystery Book 2 edition by Margaret Maron Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Thesei books are more than mystery stories. They are a wonderful depiction of rural southern culture. I grew up near where they take place, although not in the rural area, but her descriptions ring true. I'm on to #3 in the series.
I always enjoy Margaret Maron's Deborak Knott books. This one is no exception. Another page turner for Ms Maron. Keep them comin'
A surprisingly well developed heroine, with provocative viewpoints. I had to read the entire series--and it just kept getting better. The heroines background of a quasi criminal, yet very loving, family gives an interesting flavor to this morally upstanding law professional. Finding the right balance, not preachy, but not a sellout, was a definite accomplishment for the writer. Do read these; you'll be glad.
I've came across the Deborah Knott Mysteries some time ago when I was a young adult. Recently I've decided to start form the beginning, which shows this Ms. Maron had it from the beginning. If you are looking for a die hard mystery, this isn't the book for you. It falls under mystery because of course there is one, but these stories are more the telling of people and their interactions. Ms. Maron from the beginning tackled issues that are sadly still issues today, like race relations, and (in DK#1 LGBT issues). I love here books and I think I always will. Now I'm on to the next one!
Great cast of loveabke characters and mysteries worth reading. I have read two now and I am planning on reading the rest. While I read for simple pleasure, I want and appreciate a talented way with words. So far I find it in the Deborah Knott mysteries.
I first picked up a book by Mrs. Maron about six years ago and have been a devoted fan ever since. I am thrilled that the earlier novels in the Judge Knott series are being released again as I had trouble finding them when I first discovered the Judge Knott series. What I love best about Southern Discomfort was meeting more of the wonderfully Southern Knott clan! If you like independent women, intriguing supportive characters, and Mrs. Marple style mysteries, you will enjoy the series. Fast paced yet with the slow Southern attitude, I can't put the books down once I start reading them; recently, I've started reading the series again. It's even more fun the second time around! Her writing has improved greatly over the years, but the early novels can hold their own quite nicely.
I picked up reading this series at Storm Track, so there were some questions about the Knotts that I did have answers to. This book, the second in the series, answers a few of them while telling a pretty good story.

This books who-done-it hits close to home when Deborah's niece is assaulted while working on a Habitat to Humanity-like project involving women at all phases of the process. Her niece is able to identify her attacker, and when he turns up dead the list of suspects includes a few Knotts. As always the book also contains interesting court cases and interesting Southern customs.

It is not necessary to have read the first book to understand the second, but it helps. And, since the first book is as good as the second, it won't be a waste.
I enjoy this series, but the family tree is needed before it's provided in Slow Dollar. I can't give it all here, but I think this list of her brothers should help.
