"Funny" and "German" are not words I'd normally use in the same sentence. Don't get me wrong: The Germans know humor - caustic, ironic, dark - they've got these nailed.But it wasn't until I read Falko Rademacher's quirky Berlin Noir novel that I'd finally found funny. Plus camp and attitude.
I read the German version first, Ein Koffer voll Blut, then went back to read the English one because the original's full of slang, and I didn't want to miss any of the juicy lines. Hey, it was just as funny in translation as A Suitcase full of Blood."
This is detective fiction, narrated by mouthy private dick Philip Eckstein, and told in classic noir style and lingo. Though set in modern Berlin, the tale is pure 40s, with several blatant hat-tips to The Maltese Falcon, especially in the Sam Spade/Brigid O'Shaughnessy banter of this tale's version of detective vs. femme fatale.
Rademacher runs with the new breed of German Indy authors, getting lots of attention in the Vaterland. But I think he'll do well stateside also.
Break out of your rut and give `im a try. If you like his style, there are other books set in this same world and with overlapping characters, available both in the original (it's a light fast read, and a good excuse to brush up on your high school German) and in translation.
Highly recommended for noir buffs, but also anyone who likes DeMille's John Corey series or Sanford's PREY series.

I am an American, but I have been to Berlin once and I loved it. When I saw this novel was set in Berlin, I couldn't wait to read it.It did remind me of the Berlin I visited and it felt like I was back and walking the streets. Philip was a great character. Funny and a good detective. The plot was well developed and will keep you turning the pages late into the night.

Very disappointed with this novel. First one I've read by this author. Usually enjoy German writers, foreign intrigue, etc., but this was sub-par. Lacked suspense, superficial character development. Over dose of descriptions of sexual scenes to compensate for good writing.
Hope to read more in this series. Although it takes place in Europe, it still can relate to USA crime stories. The noir intent was why I wanted this book, and it is somewhat in that vein. There are a few twists and turns that are fun to follow, and in an odd twist there are color pictures of the scenes in five or six cases. That is unusual, but brings to life the place our hero is hanging out. I liked the book, and it was a good read. Thanks, Falko....you are another on my list of writers I enjoy....
It's been a while since I have read a book in the first person. It was quite refreshing. This detective novel takes place in Germany. It is full of suspense and intrigue. The main character, Phillip, does some quirky stuff but it's all entertainment. It's kind of like a throwback detective novel. It is easy to read and the pictures help you visualize what is really happening. The problem I had though was most of the pics were sideways, and since I'm reading on my computer, I have to turn my head to look at them. Other than that, it was a good read.
The first 20 pages were fast and fun to read.
Then he shot the dog.
Over and out.
I don't care how black or noir a piece is --
and how much the author/hero need to prove he's not
like everybody else --
you don't shoot a dog and not give a s***.
This is a more or less straightforward private-eye story that unfortunately has already been done many times before cynical, hard-drinking self-employed investigator with a mildly antagonistic relationship with the police and a sucker for "dames." Sound familiar? The book is promoted as being humorous, but the protagonist's sense of humor is more corny than funny. Rademacher is German and the book has been translated into English, which, to me, inevitably leads to syntax that doesn't sound right. Also, there are numerous formatting errors in the ebook which are distracting. If you like the private eye genre, you might find this book somewhat entertaining inasmuch as the story is easy to follow and moves along quickly. On the other hand,if you like humor and think this book might be a fresh approach to a well-worn (tired?) genre, I suggest that you keep searching.
Philip Eckstein is a private detective who strictly follows his own ideas of what's right and wrong. His morality gets challenged when a woman hires him to find her criminal brother without the help of the cops.
Things get more complicated than he's used to then, from crazed dogs to dead bodies turning up. Philip begins to question if who and what he is after is the same as what his hot and secretive client says.
One of my favourite aspects of this book was how Falko Rademacher vividly describes Berlin in a way that makes you feel as if you're there. Along with realistic and amusing characters, 'A Suitcase Full of Blood' is a fast-paced and entertaining thriller that will leave you guessing to the end.
